Routeique at Tech Talent Tuesday

Looking for tech jobs in Calgary? Try Tech Talent Tuesday to connect with fast-growing businesses that are hiring.

It was great to participate in Platform Calgary's Tech Talent Tuesday. This event is an awesome local opportunity for those interested in working in tech to learn about opportunities and network. We really enjoyed meeting so many individuals interested in working with companies like Routeique.

If you missed this event, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. You can visit our job board here, and check out this blog for our recap of the first part of the event, which covered the importance of addressing supply chain problems, and stay tuned for the second, which focuses on our company culture and what it’s like to work with us!

The Importance of Supply Chain to Your Customer Promise

In the first half of our talk, Kaitlin, VP of Partnerships, discussed Routeique in the context of her experiences early on in the marketing industry. When she joined Routeique four years ago, it was a shock to find that while many companies are adept at winning business, they did not necessarily prioritize their supply chain. Kaitlin says of this gap, “It doesn’t matter how many loyalty points you’re giving away if you’re not delivering that order on time, and in full, for that customer.”

A Wild Animal On The Loose In The Supply Chain

At Routeique, we compare ineffective supply chain management practices to having a wild animal running loose, causing havoc on everything from forklifts to orders, to deliveries.

“For me, I grew up with gremlins, so this is what I picture,” said Kaitlin. She continued:

You have to make sure, first and foremost, that you’re collecting those customer orders accurately. You wouldn't believe how many businesses are taking orders by phone over fax. You’ve got to make sure that you have the product that you said you had at th time you captured that order, and it is at a facility that’s close to delivery to that customer.

You’ve got to make sure that the person on site picking and packing that order knows exactly where to find that product in the warehouse to g that out the door as efficiently as possible, and you've got to make sure it’s on the right truck to the right location, so there are lots to think of.

This is why, if you’re doing it wrong, it can suck time, energy, and resources, and it can have your service and your sales team feeling like every conversation they have with a customer is about something that went missing or went wrong.

But if you’re doing it right and none of your competitors are, it can be your biggest competitive advantage.

Where Does Routeique Fit In? Adding Efficiency and Empowering Supply Chain Teams to Succeed

Kaitlin also elaborated on Routeique’s role in allowing businesses to adopt technology strategically:

So, where do we fit in, what are we doing?

We always like to say that we're building Iron Man instead of the Terminator–in other words, we’re augmenting what individuals can do with their time and effort so that each individual’s effort goes further.

And there are certainly a lot of videos that you’ll see of fully automated warehouses, and that’s certainly where the industry is going, but really you wouldn’t believe how many companies are still operating on paper processes. They might not have the bandwidth to automate as extensively as big players, and it’s people doing the work every day, very hard-working people.

And so for us, it’s really about equipping those people with the right tools processes, and technology. There are more conversations than ever about staff shortage it’s hard to find teams for the warehouse and hard to find drivers for the road. And it’s difficult to retain those people if they don feel like they’re being efficient on-site when they come to work every day.

Not only does this make companies more competitive, but it is going to allows them to retain the right talent in this competitive industry.

This is our mission, it is a combination of high-touch and high-tech that makes us different. We come to the table not as vendors with our clients but as partners. We sit at the table next to sales and marketing and have those hard convos about what is actually required to deliver on those customer promises.
