Routeique at Amii's Upper Bound

CEO and co-founder of Routeique, Mike Allan, participated in a panel and event at the Upper Bound Conference last month, discussing AI and ML and their roles in supply chain, some misconceptions behind them, and how they can improve network orchestration.

Key Takeaways:

  • Upper Bound brings together Alberta entrepreneurs and companies changing the ML and AI industry
  • AI and ML misconceptions take away from the incredible capabilities they provide for optimization
  • ML reduces the need for asset ownership and closes the technical gaps across networks

What is Upper Bound?

Held this year between May 23-26, Upper Bound is a conference hosted by the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), bringing together academics and industry leaders in the world of AI for deep-dive and meaningful conversations, learning opportunities, and talent development.

Startup Founder Panel Discussion

Hosted by Amii’s startup team, this panel discussed how Alberta startups are utilizing AI and ML, the challenges that come with doing so, and how businesses can better equip themselves to harness the capabilities these technologies create.

Mike talked about the misconceptions people may have when it comes to job loss due to AI implementation, and understanding the actual use cases and areas where these technologies can be implemented to separate the real-world applications from the science fiction concepts that often get viewed as reality.

ML In Action

This BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) event allowed attendees to see real-world examples of projects utilizing ML in two separate industries, supply chain and energy. Routeique and Kobold, two industry partners of Amii, provided an end-to-end look at their respective ML related projects, from inception to data preparation, model development, and evaluation.

When explaining how ML helps to provide a more seamless and transparent connection between partners across a network, Mike said, “Our job is to get all these companies to work together as a single unit in one network, the complexity comes from the fact that a lot of those same companies work in 5, 10, 12 other networks…”. A complex system of data collected from a variety of sources and locations can open the door to errors and mistakes. However, utilizing a variety of AI- and ML-powered tools and techniques, potential gaps are minimized or erased, allowing these companies to behave as a much larger unit without having to physically own more resources.

Final Thoughts

It was a tremendous honour to be a part of such an incredible event with so many inspiring and insightful entrepreneurs and innovators in the AI and ML space.

“The capitalization of AI and machine learning in Canada is happening now and Amii and upper bound are a huge part of that. We're just pleased to be included in such an illustrious group of people and companies driving artificial intelligence forward in Canada,” said Mike.
